A nationwide network of communities offers practical support to Bosnia's refugees

29/06/2007

Refugees from war-torn Bosnia are receiving practical and psychological support through a network of communities across the UK – thanks to Capacitybuilders

There are more than 10,000 Bosnian refugees currently trying to rebuild their lives in the UK, but they face daily barriers – including education and employment issues, language difficulties, racism and acceptance as well as post-war trauma and dealing with having to leave loved ones behind.

Support network available across England

But thanks to Change Up funding of £108,900 from Capacitybuilders – the Bosnia and Herzegovina UK Network can reach out to help throughout the country.

“The Capacitybuilders funding enabled us to help  community organisations across the UK that otherwise would have struggled to deliver,” says Selim Zlomuzica, Network Co-ordinator.

Background to the project

Thousands of Bosnian refugees have fled to the UK since the early 1990s, either through Government programmes or by seeking asylum independently.

By 1996 it was clear to refugee groups that the UK was failing to offer the new Bosnian communities the level of support and access to services they so desperately required.

Accessing services and support

The Bosnia and Herzegovina UK Network was created but over the last 10 years the size of the group and the scope of its activities has grown significantly.  As well as facing a massive challenge in unlocking vital services and support for Bosnian refugees spread across the UK, it also strives to help them become part of their local community with employment, friends etc – whilst also preserving their own cultural heritage.

Coordinating regional activities

Now, thanks to Capacitybuilders, the Bosnia and Herzegovina UK Network boasts a nationwide infrastructure, with 16 active organisations co-ordinating activities in towns and cities throughout the UK.  Some groups – such as one based in Bolton – would have been unable to get established without the network’s help and support.

Getting interactive on the web

In addition, the Network boasts a new website – providing a vital source of information, links and updates of activities, bringing geographically disparate Bosnian communities together.

Sharing experiences and bringing communities together

A range of meetings and seminars are taking place throughout the UK – giving people an opportunity to share their experiences and learning and encouraging involvement in the local communities.

Partnership working

And the Network is also working in partnership with other refugee groups, Local Authorities (e.g Birmingham City Council) and other funders to increase knowledge of services and support available.

Vital communications

Information can then be shared throughout the network through its communication links – including a monthly newsletter Haber which is produced by volunteers and distributed to around1,500 contacts.

Education is key

In addition, the network supports supplementary schools for children with classes in the Bosnian language, art and culture and English.

Bosnia House - uniting communities in Birmingham

As well as the work funded by Capacitybuilders, the Network has also recently bought a property in Birmingham – Bosnia House – to be used as a centre for the local Bosnian community, bringing together a range of local groups including elderly, disabled and youth.

Giving refugees a voice

And the Network is also providing the Bosnian refugees with a united and more powerful voice, getting involved in research projects and making international links with organisations and networks in 21 countries.

These networks continue to try to influence Bosnian policy, lobbying about issues such as dual citizenship – offering hope for the future, not only for individuals, but also for a nation.
